‘Agora,’ ‘The Killer Inside Me’ & ‘Life During Wartime’ Get Summer Release Dates

For those of you looking for a bit of a reprieve from the onslaught of CGI at the multiplex this summer, your local arthouse just might have the fix you’re looking for as release dates for three highly anticipated films have been slotted for the hazy, lazy days of summer.

First up, Alejandro Amenábar’s “Agora” has been penciled in for a May 28th release by Newmarket Films. The film, which got a tepid reception at Cannes last year though became a smash hit in Spain, stars Rachel Weisz and Max Minghella and depicts Hypatia’s struggle to save the wisdom of the ancient world while embroiled in a love triangle.

‘Agora’ Picked Up By Newmarket For 2010 Release

Alejandro Amenábar’s “Agora,” which debuted earlier this year in Cannes to critical indifference has surprisingly become a smash hit Spain, where it has sat atop the box office for four straight weeks (apparently they love dull swords and sandals movies that run almost three hours for no good reason).

The film, which we described as a “long-winded, ungratifying portrait of history set in Roman Egypt in 391AD” stars Rachel Weisz as the feminist astrologer and atheist Hypatia, and tells the story of the love triangle that unfolds between her slave Davus (Max Minghella) and Orestes (Oscar Issac; who’s lawyers are very touchy, btw).

How enticing is this! A feature on the lesser films of the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, ha. Maybe in a way it’s a steer clear of these heads-up, but it’s also, we have no clue where else to stick these/ we’re too lazy to write full reviews. Plus “Vincere” was actually pretty good. Anyhow, we’re completists for better or worse and wanted you to know we just weren’t hanging out on the beach the entire time at Cannes, though, when we think about the quality of films we saw — generally poor — perhaps we should have.

Here is your first, albeit 3D-inhibited, look at Tim Burton’s “Alice In Wonderland.” The film is due out March 5th 2010 and stars Mia Wasikowska in the title role. Maybe if you have 3D glasses lying around it’ll look all groovy. [MarketSaw]

Katie Holmes will star in the Guillermo Del Toro co-scripted and produced “Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark.” The film is based on a 1973 ABC telepic about a young girl who moves in with her father and his girlfriend and discovers they are sharing the house with devilish creatures.
