After “Spider-Man: Far From Home” was released, the original deal between the studios was fulfilled and it appeared (for a month, at least) that Sony was going to work on its own Spidey films without Marvel Studios’ help.

However, there are other, smaller studios that still have quite a bit of impact on the industry, including A24 and Fox Searchlight. And in the case of the latter, it appears that, even with the recent purchase by Disney, Fox Searchlight is going to keep being the awards season powerhouse moving forward.

The reception to the film was mixed with only a 61% on Rotten Tomatoes, but fans that enjoyed the film really enjoyed it. There was even a campaign to encourage folks to see ‘Alita’ instead of “Captain Marvel” (both were playing at the same time).

After riding high as one of the foremost directors in the superhero genre, thanks to his ‘Guardians’ films, Gunn came under fire in 2018 after old, offensive tweets resurfaced. He was swiftly fired by Disney from “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and seemingly sent to director’s jail. Then it was announced that the filmmaker was making a comeback with WB’s “The Suicide Squad,” which was then followed by the announcement that Disney re-hired Gunn for his third ‘Guardians’ film.

Point. Two. Billion. Dollars. Welcome to the absolutely bonkers world of box office reporting in the era of “Avengers: Endgame.”

We all knew this weekend was going to be massive. But even our wildest expectations didn’t brace box office nerds for the reality. “Avengers: Endgame” arrived and, as expected, was the biggest film release of all-time (in just about every way). The shocking part is just how massive the film’s debut truly was.

Holy shit.

Like, seriously. Holy shit.

Disney has hired James Gunn to direct “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” Let’s pause for a moment and allow that news to sink in.

Okay, we’re back. According to Deadline, the Mouse House saw the error of its ways and decided (as did just about every other person on the planet) that James Gunn is the only person that can rightfully direct ‘Guardians 3.’ This decision came after Alan Horn, president of Walt Disney Studios, met up with the director on several occasions to discuss the incident that led to his firing.

Not even the combined force of the cast of the film and Marvel Studios, led by Kevin Feige, was enough to dissuade Alan Horn from his decision.

They celebrated the renovation of the Walt Disney Animation Studios (building) with an evening reception. Normally, this sort of event would be held during the daytime and likely just for employees. Maybe there would be some sweets and non-alcoholic drinks, but that would be it. In this case, however, the changes studio president Ed Catmull and chief creative officer John Lasseter have overseen dictated a higher profile soiree.

With WB’s “Harry Potter” franchise about to come to a close, you’ve probably been wondering what’s on our mind as well: how will Warner Bros. eat? Fear not, as they plan to fill this hole with some ambitious spunk, thanks to their DC hero library.

At ShoWest, which is a film business gathering — not a flashers’ convention — WB head Alan Horn confirmed that they would fill the annual slot in their tentpole schedule sans “Potter” with a flood of superhero pictures.

Further proof those Batman rumors are total horseshit. Warner Bros. Chief Alan Horn spoke to Collider briefly yesterday and they got some answers on the future of “The Dark Knight” sequel, Green Lantern and other D.C. Comics film properties that WB is producing.

First off, it sounds like the Batman franchise will take a break and won’t be back in theaters anytime soon. Ok, Horn doesn’t say break explicitly, but it’s heavily implied that there will be no rush.

We really thought Guy Ritchie’s “Rock N Rolla,” was going to bomb. Our man on the scene Mr. Snruff disliked it and we felt much the same. It was a total, predictable rehash of everything you’ve seen Ritchie do already, but nowhere near as fresh, entertaining, funny or clever. The crime caper was amusing in spots, but overall pretty forgettable. What’s worse the end just serves as a sort-of cliffhanger (not really though) that is supposed to jump off to the sequel that’s called, “The Real Rock N Rolla.”

At the end we were like, “Wtf?

“Everything must go! We’re slashing prices on tons of films we acquired! Bargain basement prices!” OK, it wasn’t like that exactly, but just last week Warner Bros. chief Alan Horn (who’s seemingly well disliked these days), said due to the absorption of Warner Independent Pictures and New Line, WB was overstocked with film titles and the company was looking to sell off some of their fall surplus (see it sounds like rug warehouse, no?).

Films titles that came up in contention, deemed worthless enough to be sold were Guy Ritchie’s “Rock N Rolla” (too British apparently), “Pride and Glory” starring Ed Norton and Colin Farrell (too NYPD-bluey evidently) and Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” (too everything, hold that thought).

Hell has no fury like a nerdlinger scorned. Warner Bros. is finding this out with a quickness thanks to vexed Harry Potter obsessives angered with the studio for pushing back “Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince” from a November 2008 release to summer 2009. Most believe the reason for such a push back is the fact that WB has a lack of mainstream tent-pole films scheduled for next summer, i.e. capitalistic reasons that have nothing to do with the magical wonder of Harry Potter.

According to the U.K. publication, The Sun, Guy Ritchie’s latest crime caper, “RocknRolla” is Ritchie’s “most polished to date.” We have our doubts, as his last film, “Revolver” was a convoluted mess of Freudian 101-ism wrapped in a shoot-em-up drama . But Ritchie thinks otherwise, and is planning on his film banking so well in the States, he’s already penned a sequel. “I’ve written a second and sketched out a third. If ‘RocknRolla’ goes well we’ll be back for another,” he told the British paper.

Fresh off the mega success with “The Dark Knight,” D.C. Comics is obviously looking to expand its film repertoire with more movies based on their characters. Variety has weighed in with a rather meaty piece on the D.C./Warners comic book properties struggle.

Warner Brothers and DC both realize that they are lagging behind Marvel, who seems to put out multiple projects each year, and recently held some meetings with the intention of assembling a strategy on releasing films based on their other popular characters like Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, and the other members of the Justice League.

Goeztman might have been there to promote the upcoming “City of Ember,” but CHUD was wise enough to sneak in a few ‘Wild Things’ questions, the biggest revelation of which is that director Spike Jonze apparently has final cut on the film – something many have wondered and questioned all this time.
