Genuine cinephilia interest has just been piqued a few notches.

A new documentary, aptly titled “The Making of Last Year in Marienbad,” examining the production of Alain Resnais’ seminal and enigmatic 1961 picture, “Last Year at Marienbad” has begun screening for select audience members recently. The film is comprised of 8mm footage shot by cast member Francoise Spira (whose character, like all the characters in the film, lacks a name) during the production of Resnais’ mystifying classic.

Is “The Rum Diary” headed for Cannes? Maybe. Vulture asked Aaron Eckhart about the status of the film to which he replied, “I don’t know, I don’t know where they’re at. I think they’re trying to get into Cannes, maybe.” That’s about as definitive as anything we’ve heard on the project in a while. The film is an adaptation of the Hunter S. Thompson novel that stars Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Giovanni Ribisi and Richard Jenkins.

Alain Resnais’ “Wild Grass” was the opening night selection for this year’s New York Film Festival last week. We saw it earlier that day. And yet we’re still grappling with our feelings about the film. Overall, the movie is a triumph, as weird and wily and wonderful as “Last Year at Marienbad,” if not as gorgeous and cutting-edge.

The movie (based on a novel by Christian Gailly – yes, this marks Resnais’ first literary adaptation) concerns the relationship between a man named George Palet (the always-great André Dussolier), who has done something very questionable in his past (but, this being Resnais, that “something” is never quite illuminated) and dentist Marguerite Muir (played by Resnais’ wife, Sabine Azéma).

Steven Soderbergh looooves John Boorman’s “Point Blank,” the 1967 existential thriller that’s a bit like if Alain Resnais made an action movie and stars Lee Marvin. It’s not like he hides its grand influence over him either, and he’s admitted several times that the temporal shifting in “The Limey,” is greatly indebted to the picture. He’s referenced it endlessly and went so far as to do the commentary track on the DVD with Boorman (it’s really essential listening).

Ok, we swear to god this is the end of our Cannes reviews, but we’re obsessive completists and or sometimes slow. It sometimes takes a while for thoughts to marinate and digest (and or, we’re lazy and slow).

“Precious” (Lee Daniels)
A big hit this year at Sundance, picking up virtually every award the festival has to offer, “Precious” (previously and awkwardly titled “Push: Based on a Novel by Sapphire,” but changed due to a similarly titled lame duck sci-fi film) arrives at Cannes as an Un Certain Regard selection amidst some amount of controversy – the film is being warred over by the Weinstein Company and Lionsgate, the former believing they have dibs while the latter claims to have “officially” bought it, so a lawsuit is brewing.

So last night we finally saw the legendary surrealist classic, “Last Year At Marienbad,” at New York’s Film Forum. The glacially-paced, chilly, and hypnotically opaque (not to mention lavishly stylish) abstraction is not for the impatient at heart. We dragged our roommate to the film and she was so peeved (and praying-for-death) by its slow-moving ellipticalness and absence of narrative, she demanded we at least get some sort of blog post out of it. So here we are.
