In a literal gift for the cast and crew of “Agatha All Along,” Walt Disney Television and Marvel Studios have decided to reclassify the hit Disney+ program in the Comedy Series category for awards purposes. This is a major change after the “WandaVision” spin-off was originally deemed a Limited Series. This is great news if you’re rooting for the “Agatha” to earn guild or Emmy Awards recognition. It might be even better if you’re hoping for a surprise second season.

A spin-off of the “WandaVision” series centering on that antagonist witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), the limited series is a lightweight effort; lighthearted, light on its feet, light on depth, and a bit mid in flavor.

This past San Diego Comic-Con and D23 really told the future of Marvel. Once announcing projects way ahead in the future and making that extensive showy calendar for all to see, Marvel Studios unveiled no such thing. For film, they didn’t reveal any new films at Comic-Con other than the new title for the fifth “Avengers” film. Likewise, during the D23 Disney Expo, Marvel Television didn’t unveil any new titles and only reiterated that “Daredevil: Born Again” and “Ironheart” would arrive in 2025.

The big names are the spinoff series “The Penguin” and “Agatha All Along,” both of which focus on breakout characters from their respective predecessors. 

Elsewhere, there’s the recently nominated fourth season of critical favorite “Slow Horses” and the final season of the HBO series, “My Brilliant Friend.” For comedy there’s the latest bite-sized series for FX with “English Teacher.” If none of that strikes your fancy and you’re looking for something more peculiar, check out the upcoming adult-animated series from Zack Snyder.

It’s that mad time of year again, the fall season rush. In film terms, it’s manic in terms of releases and film festivals. And while slightly less hectic in the world of TV, there are a host of new and returning shows coming this fall, plus the Emmys in September. But the era of what we used to routinely call #TooMuchContent has reduced in the drastically changing streaming wars. The Netflix stock market crash in 2002 had a ripple effect as Wall Street reevaluated streaming value; the 2023 strikes didn’t help, but the end result has been slightly less content, which has made it more manageable for writers like us and audiences, frankly, many of which didn’t have time to watch everything.

A sequel spin-off series to 2021’s “WandaVision,” which first introduced the Agatha Harkness witch character played by Kathryn Hahn, “Agatha All Along” was created by the same showrunner/producer Jac Schaeffer who will also act as its head writer and director.

In yet another sign the Television Academy may need to seriously reconsider some of its categories, Claire Foy won her second Emmy Award for playing Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown.” This win, however, came in the Guest Actress in a Drama Series category and for a less than 5 minute appearance in the fifth season of the series. A season in which another Emmy nominee from the series, Olivia Colman, will likely lose her Lead Actress category for playing the same character (although a few decades older).

Jac Schaeffer has had quite a year. She was the head writer for Marvel Studios‘ first Disney+ series, “WandaVision,” a program that finished shooting during a pandemic, earned critical raves, and, eventually, 23 Emmy nominations. Following that Emmy haul, including two for herself in the Outstanding Limited Series or Anthology Series and Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series categories, she finally saw “Black Widow,” for which she earned a “story by” credit on, hit theaters.
