But we’re getting there today, don’t worry. You’re busy; we get it. You may not have time to see everything; hell, you may not have seen our list of the Best Films of 2022 (25 films). This twice-monthly column sifts through all of those choices to pluck out the movies most worth your time, no matter how you’re watching.

It’s another big week here at the ol’ disc and streaming corner, with a bunch of contemporary hits and classics landing on 4K, a couple of new additions to the Criterion Collection, cult movies galore, a must-have film noir collection, and more odds and ends.

PICK OF THE WEEK:

“Out of Sight”: Steven Soderbergh hadn’t been up to much when Jersey Films took a chance on him as director of their follow-up to the 1995 adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s “Get Shorty”; Soderbergh had yet to find a project that even approached the impact of his debut film, “sex, lies, and videotape,” and had wandered into a wilderness of mostly unseen indies.

Between SXSW taking place this month, some Sundance standouts arriving, and big-budget blockbusters, there are plenty of worthwhile picks from this month, with multiple being released each week from all over the spectrum.

In some ways, the Oscar game often kicks off in Park City, unofficially, critically acclaimed titles like “Coda,” often first making their mark on a potential awards run.

As vaccinations began being implemented around the world, in-person festivals returned providing a euphoric celebration of cinema. And a rush into pandemic production by studios and networks in 2020 provided some unexpected standouts this calendar year (“Belfast,” “Squid Game”). Unfortunately, that content push also led to some films and television programs that resonated like a PTSD reaction to the aftermath of the 2007 WGA writer’s strike.

It was a pretty great festival and strong year despite the COVID-19 protocol confusion, those changing rules, and Spike Lee spoiling the Palme d’Or prize early (Spike!!).

READ MORE: Cannes Film Festival 2021 Preview: 25 Films To Watch

2021 was a strong year, and perhaps that’s not a surprise since films like Wes Anderson‘s “The French Dispatch,” Paul Verhoven‘s “Benedetta,” and other movies basically waited an entire year waiting for the global pandemic to subside so they could premiere under optimal conditions.

Following the cancellation of the 2020 Cannes Film Festival last year, thanks to the global pandemic, Cannes is triumphantly back this year with a whopper of a line-up, And it’s one that’s perhaps overflowing with things that were due to appear at the festival last year (Wes Anderson‘s “The French Dispatch,” Paul Verhoeven’s “Benedetta”) and instead were held for an entire year by the filmmakers and producers.

Aside from the election result, Trashfire 2020™ was a shitty year. And a weird and disorienting year thanks to COVID-19 and having to shelter-in-place, quarantine, and social distance from one another blah, blah, blah coronavirus f*cked us hard. Movies certainly took it in the teeth this year, and especially the theatrical industrial complex, which feels like it’s on its last legs. But regardless of what happens next for theaters, people are going to continue making and releasing movies.

It’s impossible to say with any confidence just exactly he chooses his roles. There’s no question the actor is talented, but his IMDB is just all over the place. There are clear highlights, such as “In Bruges,” “Minority Report,” and recent films like “Widows,” “The Lobster,” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.” But those are offset by “Daredevil,” “Fright Night,” “Total Recall,” and “Winter’s Tale.” So, basically, when Farrell is good, he’s really good.
