Update: Sony Pictures is officially pulling Ridley Scott’s “All The Money In The World” from AFI Fest 2017. A wide release is still set for the thriller based on the real life kidnapping of John Paul Getty III on Dec. 22. That means Michelle Williams is still a potential contender for a Best Actress nomination if Sony continues with an awards campaign around the film despite Kevin Spacey‘s involvement.

If you live in Los Angeles and haven’t caught up with most of this year’s awards season titles you can breathe easy.  No, screeners aren’t arriving early, but AFI Fest has added some unexpected starpower and prestige to its 2017 slate.

Joining previously announced galas “Mudbound” (opening night), “All The Money In The World” (closing night), “Call Me By Your Name,” “The Disaster Artist” and “Hostiles” are seven films that hope to make a dent in the Oscars race in various categories.

AFI Fest finally announced its opening night film for the 2017 annual November awards season centric festival and, surprisingly, it’s not a world premiere.  Dee Rees‘ “Mudbound,” which debuted at Sundance in January, will open the festival on Thursday, Nov.7 at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

The period drama will receive a limited release in theaters and debut on Netflix on Nov. 17.

In a release, AFI Fest director Jacqueline Lynaga remarked, ” ‘Mudbound’ will launch eight exhilarating days of great movies, filmmakers and discovery in the heart of Hollywood.

It’s not a sneak, but it might be just as good.  CBS Films and AFI announced this afternoon that Peter Berg‘s “Patriots Day” will close AFI FEST 2017 next month.  The drama based on the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 will have its world premiere on Nov. 17 at the TCI Chinese Theater.
