Aw, remember “Ed Wood” a.k.a. the 1994 black and white film about the titular B-movie director that’s the last great film Tim Burton made? It’s been fairly slim pickings since then Burton-quality wise and that’s excluding this year’s clamoring and obnoxious “Alice In Wonderland.”

For us, “Ed Wood” pretty much signaled the beginning of the end (ok, “Sweeney Todd” has its moments), but in a move that could be a last minute desperate plea for quality control (or one conceived by reading our site), Burton will be re-teaming with the two writers behind that wonderful film, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski.

Universal are breathing a sigh of relief this week. Weathering a brutal past couple of years that have seen a number of high-profile, expensive films underperform, the studio scored a big hit with “Despicable Me” this past weekend. With a $56 million haul, the $69 million film should start making bank next weekend and more importantly, has opened the door to the lucrative family film genre that until now has been dominated by rival studios Disney/Pixar, Fox and DreamWorks.

Oh, for heaven’s sake. Look, we get that artists have particular obsessions that they return to throughout their career; Hitchcock’s blondes, Scorsese’s Catholicism, Tarantino’s VHS collection. But all those filmmakers tempered this by broadening their subject matter, trying other things. Tim Burton is not one of them. “Alice in Wonderland” may be on course to be the most successful film of his career, but it’s also almost certainly the worst (yes, including “Planet of the Apes”); inert, lifeless filmmaking.

We told ourselves we’re going to stop re-reporting every damn trade story under the sun because half of them just don’t interest us. We’ve gotten into the bad habit — as have others — of just regurgitating whatever Variety and THR report and again, most of the projects we couldn’t care less for, but it was just too hard to resist the urge to make this graphic.

So the gist is Jake Gyllenhaal and Jim Carrey are teaming-up for a contemporary film realization of the musical “Damn Yankees.”

Meh, we suppose it’s “movies and music” and while we do like some film musicals and many of them are very underrated or just dismissed by the ignorant, but these two actors are basically Hollywood lead.
