The Oscars partners announced key dates for the 2024 Oscars season and made some very important changes. The first is that the 97th Academy Awards will be held on March 2, 2025. For those who felt the season was dragging, that’s one week earlier on the calendar than the 2023 and 2024 ceremonies. But wait, there’s more.

Like many awards programs, the telecast saw a dramatic drop during the pandemic. This year, ABC and The Academy can breathe something of a sigh of relief because, for the second straight year, the ratings went up.

Sure, it has a structure that recalls hit network shows like “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation,” but it also has rich characters that feel almost instantly like people we know, brought to life by an ace ensemble. While network TV largely ceded the war to cable and streaming services years ago, “Abbott Elementary” has proven there’s still life on ad-supported television, winning Emmys last week for Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Supporting Actress (Sheryl Lee Ralph).

Along with ABC, AMPAS revealed that the Oscars will take place on March 12, 2023. Well, the answer isn’t as clear. Despite a big bump from having the event in-person with red carpet coverage and a crowded venue packed with various stars as an extra draw, people still aren’t tuning in at the rate they used to before the pandemic and viewership had already been declining from year to year.

There were just so many things stacked against it. Yet, even knowing that, it’s still shocking just how few people actually tuned in last night to watch the Oscars.

According to Variety, the first ratings report from last night’s Oscars says the telecast was watched by only 9.85 million viewers.

In the run-up to this year’s Oscars telecast, the folks behind the scenes kept hinting that the event was going to be very different than what film fans have come to expect from the awards show. Dubbing the event a “film” versus an awards show, with a “cast” instead of presenters, it seemed as if ABC and the Academy were hoping to use the pandemic as an excuse to experiment with the format. And while some of it was great fun, there was definitely a fair share of head-scratching moments.

No word on whether the show will have a host or not (it has gone without for two straight years), if there will be any sort of audience (unlikely due to state health protocols), or where the telecast will even originate from.

More and more, we get the news that networks and streaming services are bringing back popular series for new seasons, reboots, remakes, or a combination of all three. And it doesn’t matter if the original series aired decades ago or even just a few years back. Everything is on the table. So, that would lead many fans to believe that perhaps ABC’s “Lost” is ripe for revival.

Nope, we’re not talking about “Avengers: Endgame,” which definitely fits that description. Instead, it’s Season 7, the final season, in fact, of “Agents of SHIELD.”

As seen in the first trailer for the final season of ‘SHIELD,’ our favorite heroes (or at least the ones that aren’t being used by Kevin Feige in the MCU) are tasked with traveling back to 1931 to fight some invading aliens that threaten to alter the entire future of the human race.

Burke confirmed the decision during her annual remarks at the Television Critics Association conference this morning. This will be the second year in a row the Academy Awards will be without an emcee following Kevin Hart‘s departure late in the game in 2019.

This year’s show appears to be going in the same direction as last year according to Burke.

One would expect that Weiss, who has directed four Oscars and won a Primetime Emmy for his work helming the 90th Oscars in 2018, might return in that capacity.

This after an earlier date for next year, February 9, was trumpeted last September as a way to end what was seen as a trend in lower Oscar telecast ratings because of awards season fatigue. That decision seems to have been bizarrely short lived.

Job security is a rare thing in Hollywood, and especially in the realm of TV. But for “Fresh Off the Boat” star Constance Wu, the renewal wasn’t great news.

Earlier this week, Wu received quite a bit of backlash when she posted a series of tweets and comments about how she wasn’t happy with ABC’s decision to continue “Fresh Off the Boat.” Fans took umbrage with her use of profanities and harsh words, which made her seem a bit petulant.

And because of the lessons learned in 2019, it looks like ABC is going to attempt to replicate the success and build off of it with next year’s Oscars ceremony.

In an interview with THR, ABC’s entertainment president Karey Burke talked the fallout of this year’s Oscars and how next year might be a very similar show, with nary a host to be found.
