Like many awards programs, the telecast saw a dramatic drop during the pandemic. This year, ABC and The Academy can breathe something of a sigh of relief because, for the second straight year, the ratings went up.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 2023 calendar for the 95th Academy Awards and, in something of a surprise, the Oscars are staying in March. Along with ABC, AMPAS revealed that the Oscars will take place on March 12, 2023. That’s still effectively two weeks earlier than this year’s ceremony which was held on March 27, 2023.

There were just so many things stacked against it. Yet, even knowing that, it’s still shocking just how few people actually tuned in last night to watch the Oscars.

After 2019 saw Kevin Feige take control of all Marvel creative decisions, subsequently ending Marvel TV, it was assumed that the future of Marvel Studios television shows was destined for Disney+. However, speaking at a TCA panel, the head of ABC has said that the network is actively in talks with Feige about a new Marvel series for the future.

ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke said (via Deadline), “We love our partners at Marvel and we’re sad to see [‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’] go, it’s been a big part of our history.

Burke confirmed the decision during her annual remarks at the Television Critics Association conference this morning.  This will be the second year in a row the Academy Awards will be without an emcee following Kevin Hart‘s departure late in the game in 2019.

This year’s show appears to be going in the same direction as last year according to Burke.

In the first major move of recently elected AMPAS president David Rubin, the Academy announced today that there will be two new producers of Hollywood’s biggest night, the Oscars. Lynette Howell Taylor and Stephanie Allain have agreed to produce the telecast, replacing last year’s duo, Donna Gigliotti and Glenn Weiss. One would expect that Weiss, who has directed four Oscars and won a Primetime Emmy for his work helming the 90th Oscars in 2018, might return in that capacity.

Normally, when an actor finds out that their hit network TV series was renewed for a sixth season, the performer is elated. Job security is a rare thing in Hollywood, and especially in the realm of TV. But for “Fresh Off the Boat” star Constance Wu, the renewal wasn’t great news.

Earlier this week, Wu received quite a bit of backlash when she posted a series of tweets and comments about how she wasn’t happy with ABC’s decision to continue “Fresh Off the Boat.” Fans took umbrage with her use of profanities and harsh words, which made her seem a bit petulant.
