Far from infallible as a filmmaker, M. Night Shyamalan’s catalog of work is never anything less than bold. Sometimes the result is a classic, and sometimes the result is, at the very least, a curious misfire. “Knock at the Cabin” is very much an example of the former. This apocalyptic, psychological horror, his best work since “Split,” is a relentlessly gripping winner.

It was 1925, but it could have been any number of years before The Great Depression. The U.S. was running on fuel, booze, silent comedies, and loud music, as well as this little thing called radium. From the 1910s through the ’20s, American Radium sold glow-in-the-dark wrist-watches made out of (you guessed it!) radium. Workers, mostly women, were exposed to tremendous amounts of radioactive material and were even asked to lick their brushes before painting each watch.

When “Obvious Child” was released in 2014, everyone was buzzing about Jenny Slate’s performance. She was funny, heartbreaking, and just all around great as a stand-up comedian who decides to have an abortion. “Obvious Child” was also the feature film debut of writer/director Gillian Robespierre, who received great acclaim for the film. Now, three years later, the pair have teamed up again for another film.

In “Landline” we meet Dana, played by Slate, and her sister Ali, as they deal with the realization that their dad may have been unfaithful to their mom, and how this news affects every aspect of their family life.

We’re a week into the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, and, like American democracy, things are starting to wind down. Most of the major movies have premiered, critics have their favorites (and least favorites), and many of the hot-ticket movies have already been snapped up by distributors, with the box-office success of “Manchester By The Sea” fueling a healthy market for sellers. There’s plenty more to come — we’ll be filing more reviews in the days ahead — but we wanted to start to take a view of the festival as a whole.
