Last Friday, it was announced that Prime Video’s comedy series, “A League of Their Own,” was canceled. That’s nothing too crazy, at first glance, right? Shows get canceled all the time, especially in this era of streamers cutting expenses. However, much like what Netflix did with “GLOW” and what Prime Video also recently did with “Peripheral,” ‘League’ was canceled after a second season (though shortened) was already ordered.

On the heels of its 30th anniversary, “A League of Their Own” from director Penny Marshall has been reimagined for television in the streaming age by Abbi Jacobson (“Broad City”) and Will Graham (“Mozart In The Jungle”). Taking inspiration from the 1992 screenplay by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, who in turn based their screenplay on a story by Kelly Candaele and Kim Wilson, the new Amazon Prime Video show seeks to make explicit aspects of history that were merely implied in the original film.

Inspired by the true story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which operated from 1943 to 1954, Penny Marshall’s 1992 film “A League of Their Own” is a ’90s comedy classic starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Rosie O’Donnell, and Madonna. It spawned a short-lived television show of the same name and was added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 2012 for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Last year, Robert De Niro, co-founder of the Tribeca Festival, stated, “The Tribeca Film Festival was born out of our mission to bring people together in the aftermath of 9/11.” With that mission still leading the charge, the annual festival is returning to New York this week, June 8-19, to bring artists together and allow them a platform to grow their audience and their network. With films from 40 different countries, we believe the festival will do just that again this year. 

The full lineup includes 109 feature films, some of which we’ve seen in previous festivals such as “A Love Song” which was an official selection at Sundance, “Beba” which first premiered at TIFF last fall, and “Cha Cha Real Smooth” which we fell in love with when it took Sundance by storm earlier this year.

It’s been a year since Amazon announced its plans to turn the classic Penny Marshall 1992 sports dramedy “A League of Their Own” into a half-hour comedy series. We only knew that Abbi Jacobsen was developing the series, but now we finally get some more news in the form of a casting announcement. Jacobsen will star in the pilot opposite “The Good Place” star and scene-stealer, D’Arcy Carden.

In further proof that Amazon is moving away from prestige TV shows, in favor of more recognizable names and properties, it looks like they’re getting ready to remake a classic Penny Marshall film for the small screen. The Hollywood Reporter recently revealed that the streaming service is developing a half-hour comedy series based on the hit 1992 film, “A League of Their Own.”

While reboots and remakes aren’t the most exciting news ever, as we will soon see just about every property from the ‘80s and ‘90s get remade, “A League of Their Own” does seem to have some great talent behind the scenes that could make this series worth watching.
