IMAX Finally Realizes Audiences Don’t Want 3D Movies

In 2009, James Cameron had a vision of the cinematic future: 3D. To be fair, Hollywood already went down that road decades before, in a much more gimmicky fashion, but the blockbuster director had designed “Avatar” completely around the supposedly immersive experience. $2.7 billion worldwide later, the industry believed the format to be a savior, and soon we were seeing movies both shot natively in the format, and converted in post-production, flooding the big screen.

The last we heard about Angelina Jolie and the “Cleopatra” project that surfaced earlier this year she said, “….if we can get the story right and do the real story — there’s a lot her that’s never been covered yet, if we can do something original, we will.” And it looks like they’ve found a way.

Deadline reports that serious talks are underway for James Cameron to direct Angelina Jolie in a 3D “Cleopatra.” The impetus for the sudden movement on the project?

Warner Bros. Still Converting ‘Deathly Hallows’ To 3D For BluRay; ‘Order Of The Phoenix’ & ‘Half-Blood Prince’ To Go 3D Too

Harry Potter fans were momentarily thrilled and heartened when Warner Bros. announced last week that it was canceling plans to release “Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows” in 3D in November. However, it turns out the studio is still moving full steam ahead to cover not only ‘The Deathly Hallows,’ but back catalog titles “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.”

Warner Bros., who are still using conversion production outlet Prime Focus who are rebuilding their reputation after their awful rush job of “Clash Of The Titans,” are said to be methodically converting both parts of ‘Deathly Hallows.’ Director David Yates is still in post-production on ‘Deathly Hallows’ but will be overseeing the conversion of his Potter films to 3D.

Warner Bros. Cancels 3D Release Of ‘Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows,’ Will Hit Theaters In 2D Only

Wow, color us surprised. Warner Bros. has canceled plans to release the first entry in the two-part “Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows” in 3D. It will still hit theaters as planned on November 19th, but now people won’t need to wear the dorky glasses and pay extra money for the privilege.

In a statement, the studio said “we will not have a completed 3D version of the film within our release date window,” adding “despite everyone’s best efforts, we were unable to convert the film in its entirety and meet the highest standards of quality.

Last week, Timur Bekmambetov and Tim Burton began shopping their revisionist historical action film “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” around Hollywood and 20th Century Fox wanted it. They really, really wanted it.

From parking signs in the Fox lot reading “Parking for Vampire Hunters Only, Park at your own risk” to bloody footprints lining the path all the way to the meeting room with Fox execs, some poor interns were busy at work making sure director Timur Bekmambetov and producer Tim Burton knew how badly their bosses wanted the film.

Remember earlier this summer when fans cheered during the TheOneRing’s Comic Con panel when they announced that the upcoming “The Hobbit” films wouldn’t be in 3D? It turns out the celebrations might have been premature.

According to the NY Times, as part of the behind-the-scenes dealmaking to get the film made, it looks like the 3D format is back on the table. The format has long been in discussions, with original director Guillermo Del Toro not particularly hot on the idea.

TIFF ’10 Review: Werner Herzog’s ‘Cave Of Forgotten Dreams’ Neither Forgettable Nor Dreamy

Occasionally enchanting and evocative, yet rarely profound or reaching any affecting heights of “ecstatic truth,” Werner Herzog’s 3D documentary about ancient cave art, “Cave Of Forgotten Dreams” is not totally forgettable, but mostly a mild and familiar effort by the cinema stalwart.

In 1994 French speleologist Jean-Marie Chauvet (and two others) discovered rare and obscure caves in the south end, Ardèche department of the country. Thanks to errant air shafts, inside the caves were ancient prehistoric, 30,000 year old primitive pictorial art, found etched on the side of the crevasses.

IFC Goes Into A ‘Cave Of Forgotten Dreams’ With Werner Herzog

…and the acquisitions train keeps rolling at TIFF with IFC handling the latest high-profile buy, picking up Werner Herzog’s 3D documentary “Cave Of Forgotten Dreams.”

The documentary will give viewers “a detailed look into the Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc cave in southern France, which holds the earliest known visions of mankind.” Access to the site is extremely limited, but Herzog was granted permission by agreeing to use special lights that emit no heat.

Obviously, we haven’t been huge fans of 3D, but when someone like Werner Herzog decides to use the format, we sit up and take notice.

James Cameron To Make 3D Film About Brazil’s Xikrin-Kayapo Tribe; Doc On Xingu River Dam To Feature On ‘Avatar’ DVD

James Cameron will return to Brazil later this year with a 3D camera in tow to once again meet with the Xikrin-Kayapo tribe. Speaking with the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper (via the Herald Sun) Cameron says, “I want to return to meet some of the leaders of the Xikrin-Kayapo tribe who invited me.” Adding, “I want to take a 3D camera to film how they live, their culture.”

The director has already made two visits to Brazil, meeting with the nation’s indigenous peoples, in a show of support as they battle against the construction of the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant on the Xingu River.

The “Avatar” money train keeps rolling. After racking up $2 billion in worldwide box office receipts, becoming one of the best-selling home video titles when it was released on Earth Day this past April, and with a special edition version and more crappy merchandise coming this fall, James Cameron may need to rent out some locker space at Fort Knox. However, if you’ve been holding off on buying “Avatar” for your home theater, waiting to experience the film in all its three dimensional glory, you’ll be pleased to know the 3D BluRay release is officially on the way.
