Twenty-two years after the original film and 17 years after the sequel, a belated third film in the “28 Days Later” virus rage franchise is finally being made. Even better, original director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are reuniting for the project, their first collaboration in over 15 years. Fans who love the series could even rejoice more; this new plan could launch a new trilogy of films.

Back in 2002, filmmaker Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland teamed up for a film that would seemingly play a large part in reviving the zombie horror genre, “28 Days Later.” The film is not only a critical success but also was a pretty big hit at the box office, earning enough to quickly pump out a sequel, “28 Weeks Later.” However, that sequel didn’t share any of the cast and crew of the original and wasn’t received as well as the first film.

Making a great science fiction sequel may be easier than creating a killer comedy sequel, but not by much. Producers have been turning out second (and third, and fourth) chapters to continue stories of space and advanced technology for decades, but with the exception of a killer run of films in the 1980s and early ’90s, most of them stink.

The ratio of bad sci-fi sequels to good only makes the best ones seem even more impressive.

Boyle is super coy about the details. “It don’t think it will be called ‘28 Months Later,’ that’s all I can say,” he told MTV. In fact he says the idea is still not even fully born. “I mean, it’s absolutely not written yet, but there’s a prospect of an idea and the way these ideas start is you just suddenly get a little glimpse.”

So talk sounds premature, but our guess to the name change?

In 2007, Boyle told MTV that yes, he really thought directing the film would be a possibility. Then he said the same in September of this year. Then in October, it looked like Boyle would again hand over the reigns to another director like his did with, “28 Weeks Later,” and just deliver the idea and executive-produce again.

But now comes word from Joblo, that much like “28 Weeks Later,” Boyle might just executive produce and hand off the reigns to another director (‘Weeks’ was capably handled by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo).

In an overhead conversation, Arrow In the Head (JoBlo’s gore sister-site) said that the director Paul Andrew Williams (“The Cottage”) came up.
