That seems to be the case with the forthcoming “28 Years Later.” Prior to a few months ago, the film was more theoretical. Wouldn’t it be cool if it happened? Now, not only is it happening, but it’s the start of a new trilogy, we have two major directors attached, and the cast is really incredible, thus far. Now, “28 Years Later” might be one of our most anticipated films.

Whether penning original ideas about humanity’s undoing or adapting bestselling books to his own specifications, Garland has had a hand in several of the most intriguing sci-fi and horror films of the past 20 years. Lately, he’s stunned critics with directorial efforts like “Annihilation” (2018) and “Ex Machina” (2015) lately.

Boyle is doing the press round for the film, and after a vibrant and eclectic career spanning three decades, questions are naturally coming up about some of his classic movies and the mooted sequels to some that haven’t yet occurred. One is the raw and visceral contagion outbreak movie “28 Days Later,” which people forget revitalized the then-dead-under-ground zombie genre at the time.

So, it’s not surprising when they get all worked up over the idea of a new sequel to a beloved film when a director teases it’s arrival. But sometimes, the filmmaker in question is a bit too excited and makes things appear a bit more concrete than they actually are. That seems to be the case with Danny Boyle and the proposed threequel to “28 Days Later.”

Recently, Boyle spoke about the idea that he and writer Alex Garland had fleshed out an idea for a third film in the zombie horror franchise.

Danny Boyle’s on-again, off-again flirtation with directing this third film (an unknown title that Boyle hasn’t revealed), is apparently back on again.

In 2008, our last update, he said, “I mean, it’s absolutely not written yet, but there’s a prospect of an idea and the way these ideas start is you just suddenly get a little glimpse.”

In 2007, Boyle told MTV that yes, he really thought directing the film would be a possibility.

Here’s our 2000, 2001 and 2002 picks. Now on to 2003…

If sequels were the name of the game in 2002, things didn’t change much in ’03, as franchises began to curdle over with disappointing new installments like “The Matrix Reloaded,” “The Matrix Revolutions,” and “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,” proving to many that the allure and mystique of a series could easily be destroyed with unnecessary installments. Other warmed-over chum-like sequel continuations in that vein were “2 Fast 2 Furious,” “Freddy vs.

Ok, this is actually pretty great and gotta say the use of John Murphy’s apocalyptic “28 Days Later” score (still one of the best from this decade), really puts this one over-the-top into the “wow, this kinda rules” category.

Apparently Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez has taken Hollywood by storm this week thanks to his almost five minute short film, “Panic Attack!” (“Ataque de Pánico!”) that has drawn some comparisons to Neill Blomkamp’s “District 9” because of its lo-fi, shaky-cam, documentarian depiction of a random and terrifying robot invasion (very “Iron Giant”) on Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay.

Well, according to the U.K.’s News of the World he’s Danny Boyle’s top choice, but they have nothing to back that up and they’re essentially one of those bad U.K. tabloid.

Ryan Gosling has been reported — by credible trade sources — as one of Boyle’s top choices, but we report this mostly because, what if?

Alex Garland is a fairly big part of the Danny Boyle story, or at least phase 2 of his career. After Boyle hit the U.K. scene running with the excellent, “Shallow Grave,” and the zeitgeisty “Trainspotting,” he hit some snags.

The first sign of trouble was an ill-conceived romantic comedy called, “A Life Less Ordinary” in 1997, followed up by 2000’s “The Beach.” It’s kind of amazing how much of a reverse thrust those two back-to-back, “failures” hit on Boyle’s forward momentum.

Move over Clint Mansell and your constantly aped original songs from “Requiem For A Dream,” “The Fountain” and to a lesser extent, “Smokin’ Aces,” recycled for various trailers to import gravitas into lacking films. There’s apparently a new musical game in town. Or actually, an old rival in the trailer music game: John Murphy whose “28 Days Later” theme was once the trailer song du jour for a moment Mansell and Murphy are constantly jockeying for position in this field or rather, music supervisors for trailers are always reaching for these go-to guys to juice their previews with sonic drama.

According to Variety, it looks like Mark Romanek, one of the genuinely great music video artists who rose in the ranks alongside fellow wunderkinds Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry, is acquiring quite a cast for his second feature, the exciting-sounding “Never Let Me Go.”

Today it was announced that Keira Knightley will star in the futuristic thriller written by “28 Days Later”’s Alex Garland, who last wrote the severely underrated metaphysical space freak-out movie “Sunshine.” (Maybe, since “Sunshine’s director Danny Boyle is all the rage after his Oscar win, the film will find a new audience?

Danny Boyle wants everyone to know that if a third film in the “28 Days Later” franchise happens, it’s not going to be called, “28 Months Later.”

Boyle is super coy about the details. “It don’t think it will be called ‘28 Months Later,’ that’s all I can say,” he told MTV. In fact he says the idea is still not even fully born. “I mean, it’s absolutely not written yet, but there’s a prospect of an idea and the way these ideas start is you just suddenly get a little glimpse.”

So talk sounds premature, but our guess to the name change?

Danny Boyle will direct “28 Months Later,” Danny Boyle won’t direct “28 Months Later.” It seems like it changes every few months.

In 2007, Boyle told MTV that yes, he really thought directing the film would be a possibility. Then he said the same in September of this year. Then in October, it looked like Boyle would again hand over the reigns to another director like his did with, “28 Weeks Later,” and just deliver the idea and executive-produce again.

“28 Days Later” director and producer behind the ’28 (inster time here) Later’ zombie franchise Danny Boyle just recently said he was considering directing “28 Months Later,” the third film in the trilogy himself.

But now comes word from Joblo, that much like “28 Weeks Later,” Boyle might just executive produce and hand off the reigns to another director (‘Weeks’ was capably handled by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo).

In an overhead conversation, Arrow In the Head (JoBlo’s gore sister-site) said that the director Paul Andrew Williams (“The Cottage”) came up.

Ah, finally, a firm and proper release date and another great film to add to the fall festval schedule. Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” – which is a co-distribution deal between Warner Bros. and Fox Searchlight – is coming to theaters on November 28.

We were worried there for a second because ‘Slumdog’ was almost lost in the shuffle when Warner Independent Pictures was shuttered in the spring and it looked like the picture might get thrown into film purgatory, but it’s premiere was announced for the Toronto Film Festival and then was shared by Warner (who absorbed WIP) and Fox Searchlight (who released Boyle’s excellent, but grossly underrated psychological sci-fi drama “Sunshine.”)

“I am grateful to Warner for their careful handling of the film,” Boyle said in a press release.

Speaking of Danny Boyle’s “Sunshine” … we just got our hands on a bootleg of the soundtrack. You’ll recall the John Murphy (he also did Boyle’s “28 Days Later“) score was never properly released, likely because the film never did very well in theaters unfortunately (it was sadly overlooked).

We loved the tense, paranoiac Kubrickian sci-fi mindbender; it was a viscerally poignant cinematic experience. We haven’t seen it since it screened in July of 2007, but that supernova of filmmaking blew us away and it still resonates.
