It looks like Disney is ready to celebrate New Year’s Day 2019 with a bang. Well, with a massive expenditure, at least.

According to Variety, Disney is set to close the massive deal to acquire 21st Century Fox earlier than expected. While most people speculated that the deal would take until mid-2019 to close, officially, Peter Rice, the current Fox president and future Disney TV executive, says the deal will be done by January 1, 2019.

When the news leaked that the remaining vestiges of 21st Century (apparently now temporarily known as “New Fox”) would keep the Fox lot in Century City it was a bad sign. The historic studio lot has been the home for the 20th Century Fox movie studio since 1926. When Disney revealed they had no interest in keeping that land, that basically told everyone the studio itself, its history and the company meant little to them in the acquisition that was formally announced today.

Hollywood, as we’ve known it for decades, is forever changed today.

Disney has officially acquired 21st Century Fox, paying $52.4 billion in stock for Fox assets, in a deal worth a total of $66.1 billion. As Twitter has already pointed out, the deal comes one day before “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” opens, ironic considering the blockbuster movie is about the dangers of the unfettered reach of one universally dominating force.

Excuse us for perpetrating this proverb as the hills of Los Angeles are currently glowing in the distance, but where there’s smoke, there is often fire. The reports earlier this week of renewed conversations between the Walt Disney Company and 21st Century Fox make it seem like a deal between the entertainment conglomerates is more likely than it was first rumored almost six weeks ago.  And as talks continue and details are leaked about the transaction, many in the media are speculating on what Disney acquiring the 20th Century Fox film studio, FX, other Fox cable channels and, potentially, Fox Sports‘ regional networks would mean.
