Telluride Buzz: ‘Up In The Air’ Soars With Critics

One of the main attractions, and worst kept secrets, at this year’s Telluride Film Festival was the “secret” screening of Jason Reitman’s downsizing/frequent-flyer dramedy “Up In The Air.” Having just taken place yesterday, reviews have started coming through and buzz is already quickly building, especially through Twitter.

One blogger who couldn’t resist to turning to Twitter for a quick, early review was Indiewire’s Anne Thompson. “Up in the air is a winner,” she tweets.

Jason Reitman’s ‘Up In The Air’ To Debut At Telluride? Mark Blucas Joins ‘Wichita,’ Rashida Jones Teams With Chris Messina For ‘Mongamy’

– Jason Reitman’s “Up In The Air” is reportedly set to screen at this year’s Telluride Film Festival before its Toronto premiere. Other films rumored for the festival are John Hillcoat’s “The Road,” Werner Herzog’s “My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?” and Lone Scherfig’s “An Education.”

– Marc Blucas has joined the cast of James Mangold’s untitled “Wichita” project starring Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz and Maggie Grace. Blucas will play the fireman ex- of Diaz’s character, an upbeat Midwestern woman who goes on a blind date a man (Cruise) who turns out to be a federal agent.

Jane Campion’s “Bright Star” is set to feature at this year’s Telluride Film Festival, the place where “Slumdog Millionaire’s” glorious rise began last year. Campion’s latest effort played at Cannes this year to stellar reviews and will also feature at Toronto before seeing release through Apparition, a new banner which also has Terrence Malick‘s “Tree Of Life” under it’s umbrella. Alright, we already made our 2009 Toronto International Film Festival predix and then people asked, what about “The Informant,” what about “The Road” or “Where The Wild Things Are”? The truth of the matter is TIFF is such a beast it essentially has first dibs on anything it wants. So if ‘Wild Things,’ for example, is going to be part of the fall film festival circuit — and we’re not convinced it will, to be honest —TIFF has first dibs on it.

Alexander Payne Named Guest Director Of The 2009 Telluride Film Festival

Fall film festival season is upon us soon — watch for those impending prediction pieces — and the first salvo from that season has been fired.

Alexander Payne — known for directing “Sideways” in 2004, and hopefully, the comedy “Downsizing” in the near future — has been announced as the guest director of the 2009 Telluride Film Festival, which is the first big (but mini) U.S. film festival out of the gate in early August.
