I think the numbers have to serve as a wake-up call to the studios that making a bug-budget film and cutting corners dosen't end well. John Carter and Battleship serve as a reminder of how thin the current generation of leading men is that they are forced to throw money at an untried and untested Taylor Kitsch to see if he can become the next big Movie Star. The results speak for themselves, with the 'big 5' (DiCaprio, Depp, Pitt, Clooney and Damon) now getting on in age and desperatley chasing Oscar glory which would cement their legacy and not actively trying for big-budget films and/or franchises the time has come for a new generation of stars to prove their box-office appeal, before moving onto more challenging roles. Maybe its time for studios to stop treating their audiences as if their stupid and invest in the guys who are clearly acting talents of the currrent generation (the names Gosling, Hardy,Fassbender, Gordon-Levitt come to mind) and above all stop handing out cash just because the director needs it for a bigger trailer on set. Set a budget and stick to it.
