Saw it and disagree, but the problem has less to do with content than structure. Simien has a lot to say and tries to say all of it, which leads to an extremely messy conclusion as he tries to wrap everything up neatly. The Tyler James Williams character is the perfect lens to tell the story, but his issues as a gay black student who doesn't fit in with anybody is probably the least-realized of all the storylines. It's been interesting gauging the reaction from the black community, which seems pretty split on it right now.
