Are we so uncomfortable with art as a culture that we can only tolerate a “few” people as making interesting art, and those people have to fit some kind of model- and even then we only seem to allow one or two people who fit that model to participate.

\"There is a singular voice for all of the characters in this film: July’s. Although they are all on separate paths and journeys, they all seem to be cut from the same cloth, and the emotional tone stays the same throughout the movie. There is no growth or conclusive arch for any individual character, and it seems that the film is more focused on the journey than the destination, which works well for life, but can end up muddled when used in film.\"

Hey, sj & minions, I\'d be quite curious to hear your takes on the film. It\'s been getting pretty positive reviews, but the Sundance audience seems to live in its own universe sometimes. I assume you\'re interested in MJ since you went to the screening -- what didn\'t you like about it? Not trying to defend the film unseen, I\'m genuinely interested.

What exactly is a “Sundance ‘11”?

Isn’t the short form of the current year ’11?

Or is Miranda July leading a new vogue in mistaking opening single quotation marks for apostrophes?

(Can you actually type either of those yourself, or do you rely on the curiously-named smart quotes?)

@Jeff. I thought Me and You *sounded* kind of precious and maybe even pretentious (and I have a very low threshold for precious), but I ended up seeing it, and found it hilarious and deeply affecting. So Miranda July is not someone I can dismiss so casually. If anyone has the talent to pull a film like this off, it\'s her.

ooo, sound so good.

--

On a separate note; I have an issue with playlist reviews:

I love playlist reviews because they are always so well written and incredible detailed; every slight with the film is justified, everything is illuminated - but oh, the spoilers!

Sometimes, it\'s like the while movie is given for free in the review, and for me, without having to work for it, it either hypes the film and sets it up the disappointment or spoils all the good parts and all the juicy bits in between and the film just sites there all rotten with swarming flies.

I\'ve learned that it\'s always best to read a playlist review *after* watching the film. Then it\'s just a buddy jumping up and down with you about it! or b-tch fest! But with films like these, in my part of town, they take a while to become available and I slipped... damn it.
