I think what you’re missing here is the context of Eastern cultures having a very different relationship with gender identities than Western cultures.

Ghibli’s response was the best possible response to a question that made literally no sense at all in the context of the interview. “Will we see woman direct a Ghibli film?” Is a stupid question to ask when the studio is in danger of going under. Believe it or not people all over the world do not think making token director appointments is the best way to advance the cause of women. Ghibli has given the world more strongest, realest female protagonists than all the major studios combined, so quoting fucking Ava Duvernay – who has not made one decent film so far strikes me as pathetic.
