In reply to David. Whoa! I wouldn't call Inarritu a "nobody", considering that Scorsese was also a "nobody" at some point. Both are accomplished filmmakers who earned their place with the quality of their work. Scorsese decided to shoot "The Irishman" with Netflix on two simple conditions: immediate financing and no contractual release date. Scorsese gets to make his film when he wants and release it when he wants -- Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter ... whenever! That's just not feasible for a studio if it means competing for attention and auditorium space with Infinity War and SW: Episode IX. Now, what I consider "grim" is Disney bullying Cinema's into reserving three auditoriums at all times, for a minimum of 6-weeks, for each and every one of their maligned, overly-politicized comic-book melodramas. That's grim!

It amazes me how none of these dinosaurs have realised the popularity of home cinemas. Don’t they know that tv-systems are not what they once were? People don’t only have a tiny 20″ tv anymore… They have projectors with 100″ screens, and atoms systems to rival many professional cinemas.

We now live in an era in which legends like Scorsese have to do a film for Netflix, because studios don’t want to finance it, but nobodies like Inarritu win Oscars (Linklater and George Miller should have won) and are allowed to do anything. It’s a grim era for movies.

Most Netflix movies suck. This is true.

But that doesn’t mean they have to. Theoretically, they could make great movies — movies that would be so good it’d be idiotic not to consider them Oscar-worthy. Movies so good they would quiet people like Spielberg.

Until that happens though…

Netflix = quantity over quality.

A film is released in a movie theater.
A TV movie is released on, well….TV.

While I don’t think it’s objectively true that the quality of a film is based on what platform it debuts on, I think Netflix poor certainly reinforces this perception. It’s a crucial time too.
