Soderbergh is, seemingly, one of the most self-aware filmmakers out there. I completely agree with his assessment of 'The Underneath'. Yes, it's visually striking and has an excellent, excellent performance from Gallagher (seriously, that gambling/football scene has to be one of the actor's finest moments on screen) but so what? The film's neither a particularly penetrative psychological study nor a particularly thrilling genre film. It's stuck between these two extremes and too rigid to balance them with any deft. He's returned to many of the same concerns and narrative tropes with greater clarity in films like 'Out of Sight', 'The Limey' and 'Traffic'.
