John McTiernan's late 80's action trilogy was incredibly well shot with some of the best camera staging and camera movements of all time. Predator (1987), Die Hard (1988) and Hunt for Red October (1990). You want a lesson is how to properly stage action scenes with practical effects, watch those three movies over and over again.

Also watch Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Back to the Future 1 and 3. Yes, I said 3. And of course Terminator 2 and True Lies. Cameron was great before he embraced CGI garbage.

Sorry, but there's too much CGI in Fury Road, including the dreaded slow-motion CGI which has taken over Hollywood. Also, the color grading in Fury Road is lazy.

Miller previz-ed the living shit out of that movie, just like every other action or fx heavy film nowadays. Its hard for me to believe that soderbergh isnt familiar with that process.

I think the key to some of this stuff might be storyboarding like in animation (which Miller also directs). Absolutely every shot planned in detail, examined and re-examined on a reel to make sure it all makes sense visually, temporally, geographically etc. Then go out, get that shot. Not saying it's simple by any stretch, and largely I agree with Soderbergh - the film is breathtaking - but I reckon the key is in the animatic he puts together beforehand.
