It wasn’t. There were about 5 classes of “canon” and everything was at least 1 level below the movies and Clone Wars TV show. Anything done by Lucas was official canon….the other stuff wasn’t. Lucas didn’t care about the EU and retconned or ignored it on numerous occasions, there is so much of the EU that was retconned or conflicted with other EU stuff that it couldn’t possibly be considered official canon. As for animated shows, there’s been talk for 2 years that they’ve been planning a new show set in the post-ROTJ timeline and so Rebels wouldn’t last much longer.
