‘Spellbound’ Trailer: Rachel Zegler, Javier Bardem & Nicole Kidman Star In Netflix’s Animated Adventure

Can Ellian save an entire kingdom? A young hero’s journey is at the heart of Netflix’s “Spellbound.” The animated project hails from director Vicky Jenson, whose previous work includes “Shrek” and “Shark Tale.” Lauren Hynek & Elizabeth Martin and Julia Miranda are co-writers on the upcoming film.

Rachel Zegler stars as the strong-willed Ellian. The actress said the role is a “dream come true” and spoke about creating “an emotional performance from behind a mic.” She’s joined by a talented cast which includes John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Tituss Burgess, Nathan Lane, Javier Bardem, and Nicole Kidman.

Bardem was filming “Dune:Part Two” while competing voice work on the animated film.  “He’s like, ‘I apologize, I’ve been wearing a rubber suit all day,’”Jenson said. She also noted his creative approach to various sounds. “He played around with wolf growls and stuff, and incorporated that into his laugh.”

“Spellbound follows the adventures of Ellian, the tenacious young daughter of the rulers of Lumbria who must go on a daring quest to save her family and kingdom after a mysterious spell transforms her parents into monsters. Spellbound is directed by Vicky Jenson (Shrek) with original score from EGOT-winning composer Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast) and lyrics by Glenn Slater (Tangled).
