The Last Jedi made me give up on the franchise. I was disappointed by Force Awakens but was willing to see where the heroes of the series went. and they were taken to a dark place an executed so I’m done with Star Wars. Lucasfilm broke my heart and I’m not going to shame myself by giving them another chance.

Memorial Weekend is a terrible measuring stick for box office as so many are traveling this weekend than any other this summer. And Star Wars is ALWAYS going to underperform in China because they do not have the cultural connection like the US especially does. A little context helps, please. But more curious is how much this site was looking forward to this film failing. You’ve been champions of its mishaps left and right, and you couldn’t wait to roll around in its underperformance! Solo is inconsequential, but tonally THIS is the Star Wars film I wanted in Force Awakens, Rogue One, and Last Jedi. It destroyed my expectations!! And I suspect this will get great word of mouth and be around theaters for a minute.

I remember reading William Goldman’s great book on screenwriting, Which Lie Did I Tell, where he said (back in 1999) “Trust me, your kids will actually live to see the day when a 100 million dollar gross is considered a flop”. Didn’t even take till my kids were around, and not only that, it’s worse — 100 million dollar gross JUST ON OPENING WEEKEND is being considered a flop.

As mentioned below, Solo would have made a bundle more cash if it was released around Xmas. Regardless of the tone or quality of the film, the majority of ‘buzz’ around a Star Wars movie seems to centre around selling merchandise, and when do retailers go into overdrive? Christmas.

I think Disney had a lot of goodwill at the beginning that has diminished due to the quality of the output. Like I think if Solo opened when Rogue did it would have had an opening closer to $150m, and Rogue one opened now, the $83m. Force Awakens and Last Jedi were just not good work.

Disney needs to stop churning out a SW film every damn year, because it doesn’t feel an event film anymore.
