I'm with LaRue, "The Last Jedi" was a complete failure in my opinion and ranks as one of the most disappointing films in memory. I can totally understand younger newer fans enjoying it plenty, but I am genuinely baffled by any long time fans who saw each film theatrically during their initial release in theaters finding "The Last Jedi" great and satisfying. I found Rian Johnson's writing skills lacking at best. To me "The Last Jedi" is a beautiful mess and a most frustrating missed opportunity.

Saw every single SW film in the theaters, during their original release. The Last Jedi was the most enjoyable film for me since Empire. Your ideas that everyone must be related to everyone are bad, the very essence of poor fanfic. Pointless hidden connections only shrink and constrain fictional universes. Setting aside the "mystery" of Rey's parentage was brilliant. I literally applauded that moment.

Not every story is a puzzle needing to be solved before advancing to the next scene. Movies aren't video games.

Furthermore Luke's character evolution was totally unexpected yet made perfect sense in retrospect. It's lame and predictable to just turn him into an AT-AT-crushing superhero, as many wanted, and to have him exactly as he was 35 years ago, just older. Boring, boring, boring. This movie didn't take the quick and easy path like the previous episode did with Han. Luke changed because that's what living a half a lifetime does to people. It was great.

Hmm. Quite the mature response. It doesn't actually make a lot of sense to bother replying to something you admit you haven't read, does it?

But for the record, it was J.J. Abrams who ignored the payoffs of the original trilogy by killing Han Solo for no reason and turning Luke Skywalker into a character who runs and hides from his problems. Rian Johnson had to build on what Abrams handed to him, and I think he did a far better job than he had any right to.

Return of the Jedi is a classic movie with a spectacular conclusion, but for the first half of the movie, very little actually happens. The Last Jedi is in constant motion from start to finish. So pound for pound, yes, I think it just might rank as the better movie. The Force Awakens was a rehash. Excitement, stakes, twists, and real emotion... The Last Jedi delivered them all in spades. The theater I watched it in was filled with people who were clapping and cheering through the entire thing. But it's always the haters who make the most noise.

We can argue the merits or failures of the movie all day long; it really doesn't remotely matter. It's all subjective. I liked it. Fine. You didn't. Fine. But by not bothering to even read my initial post, you ignored what I was actually commenting on, which is the issue of Rey's parentage. But honestly, if you can't be bothered to read the entire comment, then don't even bother replying. There's no point.

The fact that you're saying it's the most entertaining movie since Empire discredits you completely. I stopped reading there. Return of the Jedi stuck the landing on a trilogy that inspired a generation. You watched a complete arc of Vader, Han and Luke reach it's pinnacle in that movie. If you're going to slap it for Ewoks, then how do you justify the completely useless Porgs? At least the Ewoks did something in the movie and had an axe to grind with the bad guys. They weren't just creatures.

Rian Johnson wrote a terrible script that looks fantastic on screen. He should not write anything else in this universe. He ignored the trilogy and the payoffs in it that built this whole thing. I didn't want a rehash. I wanted a well told story. Something with excitement, stakes, twists and real emotion. He failed miserably as a writer and the tone he chose as director is so off putting.

I grew up with an am passionate about Star Wars, and although I think Rian Johnson made the wrong call concerning Rey's parentage, I thoroughly loved The Last Jedi. I thought it was a total blast from start to finish and easily the most completely entertaining Star Wars movie since Empire. So, there... you've met ONE person. But everyone has their opinions, so I'm not here about debating any of that. I just don't understand how or where anyone got this notion that Rey could possibly be a Kenobi. If she had been conceived by Obi-Wan and an as-yet unknown love interest, it would have had to have happened prior to the original Star Wars, which would make Rey older than Luke. So that makes absolutely no sense. J.J. Abrams spelled out as loudly and clearly as he possibly could, without actually saying it out loud, that Rey was a Skywalker. The puzzle pieces he laid out in The Force Awakens clearly spoke for themselves (Luke's old lightsaber "calling" to Rey and Rey having dreams all her life of the island where Luke is hiding, among other obvious clues). Her Force abilities weren't even present until Kylo accidentally unlocked them while invading her brain during the interrogation scene. He knocked down a mental block that had very clearly been placed in Rey's mind as a child. It's the only explanation for how she could suddenly have such great Force aptitude without having any idea where it was coming from or how she was achieving it, or have absolutely no idea who her parents were even though she still remembers being abandoned on Jakku.

I do think that Rian Johnson made a hundred times the Star Wars movie that Abrams did with his mostly derivative rehash, but J.J. is obviously going to have to reverse course on some aspects of the story to explain that Kylo's "reveal" of Rey's parentage was merely a lie designed to lure her to join him and become something from nothing. Luke will have to reappear as a Force ghost to admit that he blocked Rey's memories of her past and her childhood Force training so that he could disappear from her life and truly prevent the Jedi from ever returning. Johnson made a creatively bold and artistically brilliant Star Wars movie, but it's almost impossible to believe that the producer and directors weren't adhering to a pre-established story arc when they moved forward with this trilogy. As long as J.J. can stick the landing, I think it will redeem The Last Jedi in a lot of people's eyes as a really strong and vital piece of this trilogy.

The story of how Rian Johnson destroyed a franchise is going to be delicious to watch grow as the years go by and more and more people hate what he did in The Last Jedi. Lucasfilm and Disney would have to have a screw loose to bet a tentpole like this that makes or breaks the balance sheet on him again. I have yet to meet a person who loved The Last Jedi who also was passionate about Star Wars movies. There's an acceptance of it by some because they think disliking it is bullying. That's totally off base. It's a bad bad movie. I hope JJ reset from the massive mistakes made in The Last Jedi and can salvage the trilogy he began. If he continues the tone and path Johnson left him to deal with, it will be the end of Star Wars. No one will care about standalone movies related to this trilogy. I have a feeling Rey was supposed to be related to Obi Wan somehow and then in the Obi Wan standalone movie with Ewan, you'd see how that occurred with a love interest we never knew about.
