Got a Tip?

Showtime Says ‘Twin Peaks’ Episodes May Run Longer Than 1 Hour, Won’t Have A “Traditional Release”

A couple of weeks back, actor Ray Wise revealed that David Lynch was directing all the episodes of the upcoming, new season of “Twin Peaks,” which is apparently going to run eighteen episodes long. However, it would appear that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the filmmaker’s workload on the show.

“David Lynch…is doing it all, he co-wrote [the series] with Mark [Frost], he directed every episode, he’s editing every episode, scoring every episode,” Showtime President and CEO said recently at the Television Critics Association (via Slashfilm).

However, perhaps as remarkable, is how unusual “Twin Peaks” is all around when compared to the rest of the television realm. The script for the series was not divided into episodes, and it means that some episodes could wind up running over an hour. But Showtime seems unfazed, ready to welcome whatever Lynch delivers. But it does mean that when “Twin Peaks” arrives next summer, how it’s delivered could be something quite different from what you might expect.

“Everything about ‘Twin Peaks’ is going to be unconventional. Unconventional in the handling of it and how we put it out in the world and how we market it,” Nevins said.“I want to really embrace the unusualness of it. I think it is quite possible we’re not going to do a traditional release pattern. I don’t know exactly what that means yet. I’ve had a couple conversations with David but I want to embrace the unexpectedness of it. I could definitely see longer episodes or this question of how do we release it linearly and how do we release it for people who want to stream it. There may be some difference between the two. There’s all sorts of possibilities.”

However, one thing that Nevins stresses, is that the new series of “Twin Peaks” will not be made available all-at-once, Netflix style when it arrives in 2017. So for those hoping to binge the series out of the gate, you’ll be out of luck. But maybe that’s a good thing. As Lynch’s first major work in years, “Twin Peaks” will likely be something to be savored, and undoubtedly, with a more measured rollout, Showtime can keep it in the pop culture conversation for weeks, if not months.
