The entire point of taking a job like "Godzilla" is to prove to the studios that you understand how to service the marketing of a franchise so that you can bank some money from time to time between your "real" movies. If the movie doesn't open, you won't be up for this type of work again. Your franchise career will be over. If it does open, you will find yourself on the list of directors they will trust on future franchise projects. The resulting franchise film is basically irrelevant outside of the gross. There simply is no directorial authorship on a franchise that will undoubtedly have 100 or more people with the legitimate power to veto or parse every single directorial choice.

In short, Edwards only hope of emerging from this unscathed is to make the best choices to open the film, irrespective of the impact those choices have on his creative vision. That is not as easy as it sounds. You can't simply slap any name star in and expect the picture to open. You have to find the right star for the part. Because, in the end, if he makes a fantastic Godzilla picture that audiences reject in the first 3 days, he's still toast.

As eclectic and talented as Edward's cast is, it would appear to be indicative of a director who doesn't fully grasp the very narrow parameters of this challenge. While he is technically hired to deliver a "Godzilla" picture, his actual job is to deliver the elements for a killer "Godzilla" poster and trailer. So given that he will get absolutely no help from the names on the one sheet, one can only hope that he has some real visual razzmatazz planned for the trailer.

Otherwise, he is in real trouble.

Perhaps this will adhere to Vulture's list of 5 things modern blockbusters can learn from Jurassic Park and then we can stop being shocked when quality actors pop up in monster movies. Honestly, I'm more excited about this cast than the "Abscam" cast.
