SAG AWARDS
Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series:
“Game of Thrones”
“GLOW”
“Homeland”
“Stranger Things”
“The Walking Dead”
Who Will Win: “Game of Thrones”
Who Should Win: “The Walking Dead”
Who Might Upset: “The Walking Dead,” “Stranger Things”
Lowdown: “Game of Thrones” has won this honor every year since 2012. Considering the epic scope of the past season its hard to see it losing here, but at some point “The Walking Dead” needs to get its due, right?
Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture:
“Baby Driver”
“Dunkirk”
“Logan”
“War for the Planet of the Apes”
“Wonder Woman”
Who Will Win: “Baby Driver”
Who Should Win: “Baby Driver”
Who Might Upset: “Wonder Woman”
Lowdown: Patty Jenkins’ superhero blockbuster might get the sentimental vote, but we think those stunt drivers in “Baby” will be too hard for voters to ignore.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role:
Timothee Chalamet, “Call Me by Your Name”
James Franco, “The Disaster Artist”
Daniel Kaluuya, “Get Out”
Gary Oldman, “Darkest Hour”
Denzel Washington, “Roman J. Israel, Esq.”
Who Will Win: Gary Oldman
Who Should Win: Gary Oldman
Who Might Upset: Timothee Chalamet
Lowdown: Listen, we adore Chalamet in “Call Me By Your Name,” but Oldman gives a volcanic performance under a mountain of prosthetics you forget are even there. Of course, if anyone is going to upset its Chalamet and it’s certainly possible.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role:
Judi Dench, “Victoria & Abdul”
Sally Hawkins, “The Shape of Water”
Frances McDormand, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
Margot Robbie, “I, Tonya”
Saoirse Ronan, “Lady Bird”
Who Will Win: Frances McDormand
Who Should Win: Frances McDormand or Sally Hawkins
Who Might Upset: Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie
Lowdown: This will be one of the most watched categories of the night. We “expect” McDormand to win here, but Ronan could absolutely pull it off and Robbie could be a spoiler.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role:
Steve Carell, “Battle of the Sexes”
Willem Dafoe, “The Florida Project”
Woody Harrelson, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
Richard Jenkins, “The Shape of Water”
Sam Rockwell, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
Who Will Win: Sam Rockwell
Who Should Win: Willem Dafoe
Who Might Upset: Willem Dafoe
Lowdown: It feels like Rockwell has taken the momentum, but we’d love for Dafoe to get one major honor and for “The Florida Project” to get a moment in the sun at an awards show not just centered on independent film.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role:
Mary J. Blige, “Mudbound”
Hong Chau, “Downsizing”
Holly Hunter, “The Big Sick”
Allison Janney, “I, Tonya”
Laurie Metcalf, “Lady Bird”
Who Will Win: Allison Janney
Who Should Win: Laurie Metcalf
Who Might Upset: Laurie Metcalf, Mary J. Blige
Lowdown: Listen, I’m still hoping that Metcalf can turn things around and win the Oscar, but Janney is going to likely get a big boost from SAG that might make her unstoppable.
Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture:
“The Big Sick”
“Get Out”
“Lady Bird”
“Mudbound”
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
Who Will Win:”Three Billboards”
Who Should Win: “Three Billboards”
Who Might Upset: “Get Out,” “Mudbound”
Lowdown: I mean, in theory any of these nominees could win. “Big Sick” has familiar movie and TV actors and was a broad hit. “Get Out” was the biggest box office hit of the bunch with a diverse cast and features industry favorites. “Lady Bird” has a mix of new generation powerhouses and Tony Award winning legends. “Mudbound” is on Netflix (helps!) and is perhaps the truest ensemble next to…”Three Billboards” which features legends across the spectrum of film and TV. So, the instinct is to go with “Three Billboards,” but would any of the other four shock if they won? Not really.
