It\’s not just Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren. Frances McDormand, Isabelle Huppert, Kristen Scott Thomas, Juliette Binoche, Julianne Moore, Robin Wright, Annette Bening…the list goes on. There are plenty of great older actresses getting the opportunity and doing great work (and playing people their age!).

And let\’s face it, things have changed and there have been more quality roles for women lately, don\’t expect change overnight, and besides, let\’s not forget this is a male dominated industry run by old rich jews, so it\’s not like they\’re suddenly going to have more older women in movies. They\’re old rich jews and they\’re paying to get these movies made so that they can watch young women take their clothes off.

@Lib, So Streep is a "cunt" and Crowe is a "pig," and that makes you the enlighten individual sorting this out? Streep also said that the whole thing started when reporters asked Crowe why doesn\’t he do roles like Gladiator. He said that he does roles that conform to his age, which Streep agreed with. Interesting that Kevin Jagernauth has pointed out the origins of this "controversy."

I think the big issue has to do with the roles that are out there for women. There are not many roles out there for women, especially older women, that are complex and interesting. People will bring up television and I agree with that to a point but if you look at the interesting leading roles out there 80% of them are being made for men.
