And there's nothing wrong with a 40 year old Superman as long as they aren't doing an origin story. That's actually closer to how old the character is usually portrayed in the comics than the 25 year olds they always get to play him.

Brandon Routh wasn't the problem with Superman Returns, Bryan Singer was.

The script was basically a bullet pointed version of the superman the movie script.

– Rescue Lois from falling aircraft
– Lex Luthor to frmulate madcap scheme pertaining to land and the acquisition and/or destruction of said land
– Meet Lois on rooftop, take her for dreamy flight over Metropolis
– Steal rock containing Kryptonite from non specific museum
– burrow under earth to avert disaster

A world weary Superman in his 40's, could be really interesting. I know Goyer had his "if I was to do Superman, this is how I'd do it" moment. Maybe it's a middle aged Superman, think Alex Ross' Superman Peace on Earth or Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" both featured an aging Superman. John Hamm could be perfect.

We don't need another origin story (and doesn't somebody else own the rights to the origin?) Haven't the Nolan/Goyer team earned our trust by now?

P.S commentor talking about a JJ Abrams Superman, Look up his superman script online you may not be so confident then (luthor is kryptonion).

Brandon Routh was excellent. They just need a script that isn't boring.

I know he's directing Star Trek II and it will never happen, but JJ Abrams should direct this Superman film. The tone of the first Star Trek was perfect.
