I kid, of course. I\’d be cool with Abrams returning, assuming VII is amazing. If not him, Paul Verhoeven. It\’s shocking that one of the greatest directors isn\’t in demand. Practically his entire filmography is being remade with terrible results. He\’d deliver a badass Star Wars film.

Made three big TV movies, and a studio feature just prior. James Gunn was unlikely (hardly art house, just small time), but most Marvel director picks are a little left of center, cuz they like to hire cheap. Usually it means a director with no vision, Gunn bucked the trend. But w/ Star Wars no expense will be spared, the best person will be found. And no crazy risks will be taken. Like hiring a dude who\’s made one movie (Demange) — that came out like 2 months ago — to make one of the most anticipated sequels ever. Bong Joon Ho is a more plausible choice, but why would they hire a guy who barely speaks english to direct a MASSIVE english language film (yeah he did fine with Snowpiercer, but these folks aren\’t taking chances). In the realm of actual possibility, — who knows? I\’d say Trank, but he\’s already booked for a spin off. Who else is there, really? They\’re only gonna go for someone who\’s done a sci fi or action thing. The list of promising young and/or interesting directors will such a pic on their CV is short.
