Got a Tip?

The Roots’ Tariq Recalls Mark Webber’s Friendly Stalking Techniques For Directorial Debut, ‘Explicit Ills’

As noted yesterday, The Roots MC Tariq Trotter aka Black Thought has a role in Mark Webber’s directorial debut “Explicit Ills,” which came out last Friday in limited release.

An Altman-esque drama chronicling four interconnecting stories revolving around love, drugs and poverty in Philadelphia (The Roots’ hometown), Webber apparently did his best harmless stalking job and actually wrote the part for Trotter.

“I was like, ‘Sure kid.’ He kept in contact with my manager. We would put him on the guest list at Roots shows and he would always update me on the status of his project,” Trotter told the Philly Citypaper. “I hadn’t heard from him in a while and I finally got a phone call. I was kind of floored about how sincere he was and a man of his word he was. So I read it. And it was dope.”

Given the subject matter, the film is rooted in a lot of racial and economic political issues and the hip-hop lyricist was impressed with the way the young actor handled the stories. “There are so many stories within the city that have never been told,” Trotter said. “He was able to weave together a whole storyline about four or five different relationships that was a perfect way to showcase that section of the city.”

“Explicit Ills” is out in limited release and features Rosario Dawson, Paul Dano, Naomie Harris, and Lou Taylor Pucci. Here’s the trailer.
