Sounds like the Bothan spies storyline (given only a line or two in the original trilogy). Any absurdly geeky Star Wars fan who remembers the speech from Return of the Jedi (before the big final assault) would put two and two together to see where this is going. "Many Bothan spies died…" They steal the plans and get them to the rebellion, but many of them will not survive. Sounds like a really cool spin-off.
