Keep in mind that Hellboy, for the longest time, was one of del Toro's dream projects (up there with Death: The High Cost of Living, as far as comic-related material goes). If a studio would fund it, I think he'd gladly take the opportunity to (possibly) close out his work with it, especially considering how masterfully set up The Golden Army was.
