I don't think Schoenberg is the dominant mode in music today. Most people listen to some form of pop music, so it's weird how he's talking about getting rid of narrative in film like music got rid of harmony. When cinema is based on time and duration, there's always going to be some form of narrative (beginning, middle and end). I think stories are our basic psychological need. We need to see meaning even in the seemingly meaningless. When we look at non-figurative painting, we often think about the story of the artist making it, etc.
