Famed graffiti artist Banksy’s exhilarating debut documentary, the wryly funny “Exit Through the Gift Shop,” opens this Friday in select cities and will see a rollout throughout the end of April and through the beginning of May. The film, which starts out being ABOUT Banksy, until Banksy grabs the footage and makes the movie about the guy who was originally making the documentary and then everything becomes so twisty-turny there’s a part of you that wonders if the whole movie wasn’t a hoax. “Exit” is an absolutely wonderful documentary and well worth your attention. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a huge promotional push (we saw a tiny, handmade-looking poster wrapped around a telephone pole in the East Village a couple nights ago) and so it’s going to take a whole lot of word of mouth to make any kind of impact (Bansky, are you seriously not coming to tag the shit out of the U.S. in support of your film?). But it is a must-see film (and easily in our top 5 of the year so far), so go out of your way to see it if it’s in your town.
