Those two scenes were the worst parts of the film and took me right out of the moment. I agree Tarkin’s reflection would have sufficed. It felt like I was watching an interstitial scene from a video game.

Actually, most people who didn’t know didn’t notice they were CGI.

And Jar Jar Binks was bad due to the way he was written and played, not because of the quality of the effects, which were groundbreaking at the time and paved the way for Gollum and Davey Jones.

It really is indefensible, a creatively bankrupt idea. For series that was knee-capped by Jar Jar Binks, it feels insane to rely on bad cgi characters 20 years later. Nobody but the hardcore fans will or should give a shit about a phoney ass Grand Moff Tarken, whose cameo should have begun and ended with that shot of his reflection. And Leia has the most identifiable hairstyle in modern cinema. Just dolly up to her white robes, then track up to those crazy side-buns from behind and boom, cameo locked.

They both looked so stupid and are an uncanny illustration of the deluge of regurgitated brand nostalgia we are only increasingly going to get dumped in our cinemas over the next few years. It’s already creating synergy problems in the Star Wars Universe, why recast Han Solo, but make a digital Leia? Barf.

Inexcusable. The results are phony and lifeless. Keep the characters but film them from behind or in profile with voiceover. Trust the audience. We’re actually pretty smart if you give us a chance.
