Thanks for doing a write up about this! The article is online now:
http://www.esquire.com/features/movies/the-road-movie-review-0609

I read and loved this book last year... but it was hard, they aren't kidding about what a depressing and hopeless landscape McCarthy paints. I swore I wasn't going to subject myself to a movie version.... but now it seems I have to :) October 16 - honestly can't wait.

I was not smitten with it, cirkusfolk. Thing is, I found it an unfortunate compromise that appealed to no one- it was too sufficiently dark to "sell" to a mainstream, but it also hedged it's bets- the moments of sunshine felt unearned and thuddingly obvious. I liked "The Proposition," but this seemed like fairly difficult material to pull off, especially considering the thematic emptiness, and so it really didn't work for me, with the big star bit parts (Guy Pearce in particular) proving to be extremely distracting. Then again, I saw it long ago, and it was very unfinished, and with no complete score.

Oh, and Charlize Theron, who I like, is quite terrible in her brief scenes.

So you've seen it? Any good? I'm getting an Assassination of Jesse James vibe from this film more and more. First come the multiple delays and release shifting. And second, the studio doesn't sound like it believes in the film all too much, and is trying to change it to be more commercial as much as it can. Both things happened to James, a movie I liked, but thought was going to be better than it was. BUT, there were those that praised the film from on high, so perhaps this is where the reviewer of The Road is coming from. It might be good, but not THAT good. If so, I really couldn't see the studio holding it back like it did. Bleak or not. I don't think No Country For Old Men was the happiest film of all time, and look what business it did and awards it won.

I now wonder if the cut I saw was shorter- I don't recall a scene of McPhee and Mortensen in front of a burning forest. And I don't see how you can spin Oscar gold out of Duvall's super-brief appearance.

I'd really like to see it again, but the Esquire writer's hyperbole feels like he's discussing an entirely different movie.
