The strained marriage between the Harfords in Eyes Wide Shut is the lynchpin of the story. Once Alice drops the bomb on Bill ("No dream is ever just a dream", he says), it sends Bill onto his journey which lands him in a variety of situations – meeting Domino the prostitute, ending up at the masked party, etc. Each situation then expounds upon his uncertainty toward whether it\’s worth tearing his marriage apart just to have an experience akin to what his wife had mentioned to him. Each time he finds himself at the cusp of almost heartless revenge, ready to seize the opportunity before him but he prohibits himself mentally before he gets in too deep. Unfortunately by the time he ends up at the party, forces he couldn\’t have known were in play converge upon him and prey on his own insecurity and fledgling paranoia by taking what is already a lavish spectacle to an even grander scale. Once he\’s thrown out of the party and meets with Victor (Sydney Pollack\’s character), it\’s only then that the viewer comes to realize that what seemed like a severe situation was just a ruse to spook him into compliance. So there is, arguably of course, a loose socio-political tone present as well.

I\’ve seen "Eyes Wide Shut" about 10 times and never really picked up the "socio-political ringleaders" thing. Kubrick flicks do have a lot of layering, and some of the theories about "The Shining" do have some merit. (I think the subtext about westward expansion and the eradication of the Indians, racism against blacks, etc., has some merit.) But "Eyes Wide Shut" is definitely about matrimony. Truly. If you watch the film and read the Schnitzler novel Kubrick based the movie on, his intentions are fairly clear. Even if Kubrick has something to say with all the behind-the-curtain stuff you guys are claiming, that\’s, at most, secondary. The movie is a dream Tom Cruise character has after his wife reveals to him that she almost destroyed their marriage to have sex with a sailor one weekend.

EWS has nothing to do with marriage? I feel that\’s a stretch, though ideas around power and how much we are really awake could be seen to be available in both Fincher\’s and Kubrick\’s films. I\’ll watch again at some point but would say wherever EWS goes fractured marriage is at least the prominent springboard.

Re a couple of the comments Kelly does say kindred spirit rather than carbon copy, I think he puts it well when he says that Gone Girl is Eyes wide shut with \’The blindfold off and the ugliness in plain sight.\’ I\’d add that this time round it feels like audiences are ready for it.

It is all about the hidden socio-political power base that is in control of society. What the profane see as erotic orgies is something entirely different. Knowing what it actually is certainly makes the title of the film appropriate. I encourage those who disagree to watch it again. Peace.

Eh, I not so sure about that. Eyes Wide Shut is a brilliant and complex film. Gone Girl, at least on one viewing, just seemed to me like more stylish and pretentious version of the Jagged Edge/Presumed Innocent genre.

That\’s all fine, but I\’m not sure I\’d characterize "Eyes Wide Shut" as a film about a "crumbling marriage." There isn\’t really enough detail given about the marriage to judge its overall health, but one would assume based on a number of things it\’s a stable marriage. The movie is about the moment Tom Cruise\’s characters get a peek behind his partner\’s curtain and learns the shaky, human material on which all marriages are founded.
