As a Police officer I can say this movie was fantastic. The critics try as they might are unable to understand this movie on a level those behind a badge especially a LA badge can. It is a real tragedy. Much like butch and sun dance it follows a character unable to change with the new world. It reflects the home life very well. I have watched good cops who haven't done near the things Harrelson's character has become victims of their own on the job demons. Dave Brown isn't a bad guy but my heart bled for him watching his world spiral down and everyone turn their backs on him. I was concerned the film would be a disrespectful propaganda piece but it was not. It covered a very difficult subject and genuinely showed you the hardship many officers went through. They were raised in a society where the way the did police work was the standard. Rightly or wrongly it was the way things were done then. And just like that one day they were told to abandon all they knew and be someone else. Not an easy thing. And those who had trouble changing were crucified. They did the dirty work when they were told that's what it takes. Then when political priorities changed, the same politicians who used and encouraged their iron fisted law bringing, washed their hands of them and Hung them out to dry. Those officers lost everything, their jobs, their families, their identities. Yes some officers were truely bad. Others were made into those monsters on the news. I believe Dave Brown to have been one of those poor tortured souls.

If The Messenger is any indication, you can expect an unflinching rumination on real life, that was such a great film & I've been waiting eagerly for this since it was announced, I was bummed to hear this week's release is only a qualifying run and it won't really rollout until January 27th.

Being a police officer myself, I'm interested in this film but I am also worried. I'm highly critical of films involving police officer as the main subject, and I'm not talking about Die Hard or the likes of those fun films. I mean the ones that try to show more of the underbelly of police work. My favorite is LA Confidential and to a lesser degree, Magnolia (very realistic), and I even enjoyed Training Day (though very unrealistic). I liked Copland, thought We Own The Night and Narc we just ok and even thought the film Crash had an interesting police aspect to it. Hell, even the Nick Cage Bad Lieutenet had it's strong points. But on the other hand, I did not like Dark Blue (what this film kinda seems like) and I hated Street Kings which was also written by LA Confidential scribe James Ellroy who also wrote Rampart. So I really don't know what to expect with this one.
