I just saw this and thought it was pretty good. Yes, it is a rip-off of Red Dawn (why the dig at the 'Reagan era politics" though- were you alive then?) but that's okay. If a billion people can forgive the the blatant rip-off of everything in THG, then they should be able to look past the Red Dawn rip-off.

The acting was just fine. The characters (except for maybe the Jack Black wannabe) were all likable, especially the main character Ellie. I also like the fact that there wasn't much time spent agonizing over morality. The characters knew what needed done and the did it. Will any of these people win awards? No. But that acting certainly was fine. Let's also not forget that this book was written in the early 90's when 'stock' characters were not necessarily as noticable.

Gotta, disagree here. This movie was ridiculous and pretty laughably bad at times. A bunch of stock teens (the stoner! the religious one! the rich girl! the jock! the ethnic guy!) running around an updated '80s movie, while the writer/director makes numerous and obvious ploys to make sure the plot isn't seen as racist. The big finale was a real stretch on the believability scale.

I loved this movie so much!!! That quote 'the books always are' was legendary. Caitlin Stasey is one of my favourite actresses and in this she was amazing, although I still wish she never left "Neighbours". Rachel, Ty, Ringo, and Donna were the best, and now they've all left! :'(

The movie wasn't great but the endless string of novels it’s based on are very good.

They have a fantastic sense of place and the many, many scenes where the characters wax nostalgic about their lives before the war are often quite powerful. Also, John Marsden can write the heck out of an action scene.
