The reason the \’mumblecore\’ title is such a lame descriptor is that there is a great deal of variation between the types of films that people consider to be mumblecore.

This is obviously tightly scripted (and seemingly poorly scripted) and looks pretty bad. The Duplass Brothers are great, The Puffy Chair has more in common with Apatow\’s quasi-improvisational style of filmmaking than mumblecore and is a really great relationship film. It was made on a very low budget, which seems to be the only reason it\’s considered mumblecore.

Either way, films like Tiny Furniture are what give mumblecore (and by extension, people who are doing something relatively different like the Duplasses) a bad name.

I haven\’t seen TF yet, it looks bad to me but it must have some redeemable qualities if Apatow has taken her under his wing. I certainly hope so for the sake of the HBO pilot they\’re doing together.

Great review. This movie has gotten a lot of hype only because it was shot with a Canon 7D. Proof once again that just because you fancy yourself a filmmaker and have a trust fund or an upscale Manhattan apartment to move back to after college doesn\’t mean you\’re a director.

Same thing can be said about the \’mumblecore\’ scene and the Duplass brothers. Just a lot of hype with no quality.

Please..no more movies about the general malaise of twenty somethings.

I couldn\’t agree more. I was so turned off by everything in this movie when i saw it a few months back. When i heard she was getting some serious offers following this, i cringed at the thought of sitting through more work like this.
