Who ever wrote this article obviously has no clue what the director was trying to portray. Furthermore, while the story is "INSPIRED" by true events, it is not a re-enactment of actual events. If you had any understanding of Asian or Oriental culture, you would realize that a bond is formed between two men without having to say to much. The director here captured the essence of true Japanese and Korean culture between two boys who turned to men who turned to rely on each other. The characters are not western people, they are Asian you moron. Before you write an article about something you clearly don't understand, learn the culture first. Comparing it to a hollywood type movie, your an idiot. Secondly, they hated each other so why would they spend time talking to one another in a touchy feely way? I am glad that the director left it out. Lastly, if you watched where these two men went, how do you propose the director capture the entire story in under 2.5 hours if there is so much time spent on talking?
Director Kang captured the true spirit of Korean and Japanese culture while bringing to light a story of how two young men, who came from two countries who hated one another, could forge a bond during the most horrible time of their lives. Do some history research and instead of analyzing what you think Kang should have done, just watch the frickin movie.

Emma Bernstein you absolutely nailed the review. What could have been a real classic and fantastic movie was ruined by some sequences of poor and over indulged CGI scenes and demanding way too much believability from the audience as the main characters became almost cartoon-like in surviving anything and everything thrown their way. A good 30- 40 mins.should have been edited from this movie.
