Good review, except John Carpenter\’s movie was not the original \”The Thing\”. His was a remake of 1951\’s
\”The Thing From Outer Space\”, a classic sci-fi thriller directed by Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks.

Who\’s to say that John Carpenter\’s original isn\’t a generic monster movie?

I\’m only half kidding. Back when it came out it was probably good enough to be \”masterful\” but by today\’s standards it\’s a pretty solid and entertaining monster movie (which is not a bad thing).

I can see your points and am somewhat disappointed that it turned out that way (although, I\’ll reserve final judgement until I see it myself). But you can\’t help but wonder, how different would the events be on a base closeby, haunted by the same monster, in the same environment, just with this time, Norwegians.

Your point about the ending being open ended for \”The Thing 2\”…now again, I didn\’t see it myself, but, this is supposed to be a prequel, no? Obviously they would leave the event open ended, because, well, there already is a \”sequel\” to it. Unless I\’m missing something, but it seems a point not thought through, rather than an attempt at Universal to cash in and make a franchise.

I can see this going places in a \”Thing 2\” (sequel of the original) if the environment changed. See what this creatue will do elsewhere. Would be interesting.

Not that I\’m surprised by this review, but I\’m kind of shockingly upset that the film turned out to be as generic and lame as the previews made it out to be. Was really, really hoping to be pleasantly surprised by the film. 🙁

How hard can it be to just show lots of delicious, gory, body horror? There wasn\’t that much to the original Thing, really.
