According to Studio System the first film\’s Return on Investment was -28.60 % . That is calculated from domestic ($155M) and international theatrical ticket sales ($241M) against the cost of making ($170M) and marketing ($???M) the film.

Boy, do people love to throw baseless numbers around here! Anyway, here\’s all the numbers related to "Snow White and the Huntsman", taken directly from Box-Office Mojo, IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes. It\’s doesn\’t get more unbiased than this, so take them for what they\’re worth:
Budget: $170 million
Domestic Gross: $155 million (terrible, however you spin it.)
Worldwide Gross: $397 million (only things justifying a prequel/sequel.)
TOMATOMETER: 48%
RT AUDIENCE SCORE" 52%
IMDb RATING: 6.1/10

… To be seen as a definite financial success, the first movie had to at least make double its budget at the box-office, which it barely did. So… given its overall reception and the very small profit it managed to make, it\’s very hard to dispute Lyttelton\’s assessment that turning this Huntsman storyline into a franchise is a desperate move from Universal to make something out of seemingly nothing.

The actresses have – hopefully – better movies coming out later this year: The Last Face, The Girl on the Train and The Zookeeper\’s Wife. I\’m going to watch them for sure, but not this movie here.

so tired of critics bad mouthing the movie industry,batman vs superman rubbished,huntsman gets a c-,so few movies get a positive review.Are these co called critics determined to destroy all big budget films,oh well at least they will then be unemployed .

LOL Truthy, you speak as if you have a clue. Studios don\’t just decide to have a franchise and potentially lose tens or hundreds of millions of dollars "come what may." You can claim the first was unsuccessful, but every trade, all of which have far superior knowledge on these matters than you do, says it made a decent profit, and Universal obviously felt it did too or they would never have greenlit a sequel. Considering how these reviews are far worse than the mediocre reviews for the first, this looks like a dud. Also, the reviews are ripping Chastain\’s accent to shreds, more than Stewart\’s ever was. No go run off and watch a Dior ad.

No, Ugonna, the first film hardly made any profit (it needed to triple its production budget in order to show real profit, and it didn\’t). Universal had decided it was going to have a fairy tale franchise, come what may, so they greenlit the sequel, calculating that they could still make a profit on the second and third films. What money it did make was due to the genre, not the lead actress. It drew the Game of Thrones/Hunger Games/Twilight audiences, but not enough of them. Hemsworth and Charlize fans also showed up, and they will show up again for this film. Blunt and Chastain more than make up for the absence of the block of wood who couldn\’t maintain a British accent through the first movie. This has the advantage of looking very good, so it should have a great opening weekend.

I don\’t know where the Playlist gets its writers but the first film was based on Snow White who is not known to be a warrior princess. It was a hard sell,but it made money. I don\’t know where you got your figures from. It made almost 500 mil based on a soft Disney princess and that was due to Kristen Stewart. The other Snow White film which you\’re mistaking this one for that came out a couple of months before SWATH failed at the box office. That starred Julia Roberts. That busted at the box office. So get your Snow White movies straight.

The first film made a huge profit, didn\’t under perform at all. Many liked the first. Charlize\’s performance was considered the best in the first film, and in all other reviews I\’ve seen she and Blunt together are considered the best in this film. Just state your opinions without treating them like facts.
