'The troupe finds them teaming with Goblins, Orcs, deadly Wargs.' Somehow I can't see Gandalf and the rest brokering a deal with the foul minions of Middle-Earth that will result in a mutual gain. I guess we'll find out!

I'm sure all three 'Hobbit' films will be great fantasy epics par excellence, but judging by this and other reviews, a consensus seems to be forming that '...An Unexpected Journey' whilst a rollicking good time all told, is simply too long and with too much background detail stuffed into it's ample run-time. Peter Jackson clearly has a blind spot with judicious editing choices and could have easily dropped the Ian Holm prologue and stuck to the core story at hand, keeping it moving with a brisk pace whilst also simultaneously giving it some breathing room. I don't know yet if the decision to extend the story across three films will prove to be the correct one, but even with three films to tell the story, this first installment could have have been brisker, pacier, and a good half-hour shorter...
