Amazing film. People seem to love making references, and to me Tarr seems the absolute worst. Better would be his much closer neighbor Sharunas Bartas, and he seems to make jabs at Bergman (as a character did in dialogue in his previous film), but the most obvious reference point is Kafka. It's almost like a slightly altered version of The Trial, with a touch of Roy Andersson's similar fusion of commerce and religion. Others have named Kaurismaki, which may be the best reference point of all, and the last film is almost straight out of Greenaway's The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover, but in the end it's got so many supposed reference points that you have to credit the man for making his own work. I know I was constantly surprised throughout.
