now i am a firm believer in not taking away peoples right to criticize black people and their work...some people think by merely having an opinion its the ole crab in the barrel routine...i disagree we should be critical of them as we are of anyone else...however with this film it does something so rarely done that it does indeed imo deserve a BIT of a pass......to see black people of varying shades with such beautiful cinematography, speak on educated subjects in a movie that doesnt depict them as sell outs or uncle toms while doing so, and in something that isnt a biopic or movie dealing soley/mainly with racism/slavery is amazing and a welcome addition.........and for that you have to appreciate it for what it is, black art on screen.......i agree with most of your observations however i dislike the whole robotic argument of characters in films in general...some people in real life arent eccentric or dramatic and its easy to make those who are appear interesting on screen...but when a film allows you to meet a character who isnt he/she shouldnt be labeled robotic.......a black man with his background is utterly amazing and interesting to see and also refreshing...which is a lot more than i can say for characters that arent "robotic" and are "well fleshed out" in most movies including the indie darlings.....as for the actor playing hess he did a great job portraying a refreshing character....music was ass tone was amateurish again i agree with most of your points...but nothing that rare in tone, subject, and visual look regarding such a stereotyped people being portrayed in such rare and unique form should be given a d+.......also of note sometimes youre not supporting the film itself but the films that get made because of its financial/critical success.....and for that i did the vimeo and plan on watching this flawed rare beautifulfilm in theaters as well if available

Loved the film. Challenging to understand at first, and I\'m still not sure if I do, but worth a few watches. It\'s too bad Spike has so many loyal critics pontificating and slagging his work across the board these days. The Flag in this movie was an amazing character but I don\'t see anyone talking about it or even acknowledging its importance. They\'re too busy yelling about Kickstarter and crowd-funding in general and other nonsense. Crazy world we live in. I appreciate Spike Lee\'s dedication to art for art\'s sake, his expression of love for the cinema and courage to take gambles. The opposite is too prevalent these days... I wish they\'d get held to the same standard and panned mercilessly! Lol oh well

Spike Lee has always been an inconsistent filmmaker. He'll make a great film like "Do the Right Thing" and then follow up with something mediocre like "Mo Better Blues." But recently, Spike seems to be having more misses than hits. When I first heard about this project on Kickstarter, my expectations were low. Later, when I heard it was a remake of Bill Gunn's "Ganja and Hess," I thought that Spike Lee was out of his depth. This review seems to confirm my suspicions about the film. I don't know if Mr. Lee is spread too thin or has simply lost his way. However, I will still try to see the film with an open mind. We'll see.
