For some reason this was released straight to DVD in France (after a premier at the [soon to be "late"] Gerardmer festival). Cast looks great and photography looks awesome (although I'm afraid it's starting to feel a bit derivative). Anyway nice review (although I surprised you didn't mention Balaguero in the opening paragraph... this guy really is an amazing director mostly because he's still working in this Gothic/Old school feel ... but in present day stories).

This film has a great first act. However once she's at the school it's a let down. The director has no idea how to wring tension and scares out of what is actually an intrinsically scary situation. He should've taken a tip from the Orphanage - less is more, don't show, let the audience scare themselves - the minute you make that first reveal is crucial... too soon and your sunk. The less said about the twists the better... it's a depressing realisation when you discover that the whole thing has been gearing up like some big clunky piece of machinery to deliver preposterous twists that don't in the least hold water. Great first act though, great photography, design, costumes, acting, and definite potential, shame the end result isn't a little stronger.
